IN reply to the inquiry in the last paragraph of Mr. Campbell's letter of the 4th instant, relative to the Namting-Nalawt section of the Burmo-Chinese frontier, 1 am directed by Mr. Secretary Brodrick to request that you will inform the Marquess of Lansdowne that the Government of India have reported by telegraph that, though supervision over the provisional boundary cannot be very effective, they are making the best arrangements possible to obtain immediate information of transgressions of the boundary by Chinese troops or officials.

India Office, May 6, 1905. BURMAH-CHINA boundary. Your telegram of the 16th September, 1904. His Majesty's Minister at Peking has addressed the Chinese Governinent in accordance with the letter from India Office to Foreign Office dated the 28th September, 1904, copy of which was inclosed in the letter from Political Secretary of the 30th September, 1904. Sir E. Satow presumes that some sort of supervision over the provisional frontier will be exercised by the Government of Burmah, and that transgressions by Chinese troops or officials will be reported by them. I shall be glad to receive a further report on this point by telegraph.

May 18, 1905. YOUR telegram of the 6th May, regarding the Burmah-China frontier. It is impossible for any effective supervision to be exercised over the provisional boundary We are, however, making the best arrangements we can with a view to ensuring that any transgression of the boundary by Chinese officials or troops shall he reported immediately.
